- Position Title: Youth Program Summer Support Staff
- Hours: 18-25 hours per week
- Reports to: Youth Programs Director Agency/Program
- Mission: The Brick House Community Resource Center supports youth and family well-being by providing a place in Turners Falls for creativity and learning, growth and leadership, and strengthening community connection. We work to improve access to local resources for parents and families, offer an after-school Teen Center for youth, and serve as a community resource center for local groups to host programming in the arts, recreation, wellness, and social justice. During the summer, the Teen Center is open for youth ages 11 to 19, Mondays through Thursdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Brick House offers structured youth leadership programming with a focus on arts, creative expression, health and healthy communication, harm reduction, social justice, and job readiness.
- Position Objective:
- To help ensure that Youth Programs are well-supervised, safe, accessible, and engaging for local youth participants
- To ensure that Youth Programs participants read, understand, and sign the Youth Programs safety agreement, and that program participants have submitted necessary permission slips before participating in programs
- To support youth participants by encouraging leadership, peer support, healthy communication, conflict resolution, and community-building
- To provide responsible and thorough intervention when there are behavior issues
- To provide intervention and or referrals when a young person is facing crisis in their personal or home life
- To design, coordinate, and implement quality arts and wellness programming
- To implement and facilitate programmed activities for youth participants
- To establish positive working relationships with all teens
- Duties and Responsibilities:
- Staff daily Teen Center hours, providing support for youth ages 11 to 19
- Record daily participation data
- Meet one-on-one with new participants to read over Teen Center rules, Safety agreement, and permission slip.
- Develop and implement appropriate programming for teens, with support from Youth Programs Director and Youth Programs Coordinator, and input from youth participants.
- Provide conflict resolution support and accountability within a Restorative Practices framework for youth participants.
- Encourage youth to provide regular input for Teen Center programming, changes, and improvements through surveys and one-on-one conversations.
- Supervise youth leadership programming including physical recreation, community service projects, the youth summer internship program, healthy living skills, and job readiness.
- Co-facilitate leadership programming including nonviolent communication, conflict resolution, social justice, and anti-oppression workshops.
- Plan and facilitate art activities for youth participants. Focus may include music, poetry, fine arts, theater, movement, etc.
- Provide referrals to other local youth and family services, as needed
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth ages 11 to 19 in a group setting
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development, and familiarity with the impact of childhood traumatic experiences on youth development, behavior, and risk
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, patience, and the ability to work in a challenging, high-energy environment
- Experience and confidence intervening with youth during times of tension, conflict, and or disrespectful behavior
- Familiarity with Restorative Practices and experience utilizing non-violent communication skills, mediation, active listening, and restorative limit-setting to address issues
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Facilitation and/or training experience
- Demonstrated ability to cooperate with and interact respectfully with staff members and community members.
- Commitment to working individually and within an organization to achieve social and racial justice, conversant with issues of social and systemic oppression
- Excellent written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills
- Personal talents, hobbies, or areas of knowledge which can be shared appropriately with youth such as: music, dance, visual arts, martial arts, outdoor skills, gardening, etc.
- Basic technology and computer literacy
- Reliable transportation, insured and registered vehicle with up-to-date inspection, plus willingness and capacity to transport youth occasionally to programs and services
- Must be able to pass a CORI (background) check
- Compensation: $18.00 per hour (or commensurate with experience)
